We are seeking a leader who has worked on metadata assessment, discovery initiatives, focused metadata indexing and policy, and is prepared to oversee a department responsible for the creation and management of MARC and non-MARC metadata across the Brown University Libraries. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Access Services and Collection Management, the Head of Metadata Services provides leadership, both within the Metadata Services Department and throughout the Library, for the development, implementation, and assessment of metadata infrastructure and policies.

The position supervises and coordinates the metadata services department, coordinates database and discovery systems quality management, and leads the outreach and development of internal and external partnerships related to metadata services. The Head of Metadata Services collaborates with other Library departments to ensure priorities are met and the Library-wide goals associated with metadata are accomplished.

The position directly manages 4 librarians, and oversees a department of The Head of Metadata Services will actively participate in national and international discussions relating to the access, retrieval, description, and management of information resources, and will collaborate with external partners to extend the work of the department and enable the department to contribute to the development of the library metadata field. We are seeking a team-oriented manager who is accustomed to working in a production-focused environment. The successful candidate will have the knowledge and initiative to recognize and take full advantage of transformational opportunities as standards and tools for resource description of physical and digital collections continue to evolve.

Reporting to the Head of Metadata Services, the Head of Shared Cataloging is a creative, detail-oriented and collaborative manager, capable of leading the work of the shared cataloging unit in a changing environment.

The position manages 7 staff engaged in adaptive cataloging, metadata creation, and archival arrangement and description, including creation of EAD finding aids. This position is responsible for developing workflows, reviewing staff work, and designing and providing training for the unit. This position also performs both original and complex adaptive cataloging and advises on database maintenance projects.

The incumbent serves as primary contact for the Library's identity management vendor, participates in the assessment and continuous improvement of operations and services, and contributes and updates NACO authority records. This highly collaborative and innovative librarian will serve as the primary liaison to the Department of Economics and the C. Starr Program in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Organizations BEO , an interdisciplinary program sponsored by the departments of Engineering, Economics, and Sociology, and entrepreneurial programs from the School of Engineering and from departments across campus.

In collaboration with colleagues from across the Brown University Library, the Librarian for Social Science and Entrepreneurship will work with students, faculty, and other University stakeholders to assist researchers as they develop entrepreneurial projects, conduct market research, explore business models, and engage in community partnerships to strengthen the local, national, and international community.

A creative thinker, the Librarian for Social Science and Entrepreneurship will bring new ideas, models, and an entrepreneurial approach to engaging students, faculty and staff at Brown University in fulfillment of our mission to serve the community, the nation, and the world by discovering, communicating, and preserving knowledge and understanding in a spirit of free inquiry, and by educating and preparing students to discharge the offices of life with usefulness and reputation.

This new leadership position will foster a coordinated and comprehensive approach to developing a supportive environment and culture of learning within the Library that actively anticipate and adapt to changes in technology, operations, and services. In addition, the Director will develop and implement training programs and methods that advance, strengthen, and sustain team-based approaches and collaborative decision-making.

The resulting programs will emphasize staff learning and development and support a positive organizational culture that demonstrates the value that the Library and University place on collaboration and personal achievement. Working with Library Human Resources staff, Library managers, and others, the Director of Library Organizational Development and Planning will oversee the planning and implementation of other human resource programs and services that support the recruitment, onboarding, retention, and ongoing development of Library staff.

The Director will utilize a wide array of internal communication strategies including web, print, face-to-face, and other platforms to educate, inform, and energize constituencies within the Library. To fulfill these responsibilities, the incumbent will have significant knowledge of organizational development issues and trends based on work experience in libraries, higher education, cultural resources, nonprofits, or business.

Experience with analyzing and improving group dynamics, communication, and performance is also essential, as is knowledge of productive teambuilding, leadership development, and supervisory proficiencies gained from developing or participating in programs addressing these areas of organizational effectiveness.

The Brown University Library seeks a dynamic and skilled professional to serve in the role of Chief Conservator. Leads discussion sections and assists faculty with instruction and grading. Develops the co-curriculum that includes professional development and training, alumni connections, and special events.

Manages relevant aspects of the program budget including projections and reports to funders. Created and implemented a month education curriculum. Successfully piloted a leadership development program and established clear goals for the future. Developed a strategic plan for the presidential transition to ensure that standard operating procedures were clear, comprehensive, and organized at the end of the Administration.

Advised the Fellows on ways to enhance their professional direction and focus. Implemented training programs to connect them to resources that helped them achieve their leadership goals.

Built and cultivated partnerships and opportunities for engagement with external organizations. Represented the program at events, speaking engagements, and alumni gatherings. Led international and domestic policy trips, leadership retreats, and 85 educational events annually.
